The life of a traveler is full of adventure. Often, you don’t know what you will be doing or where you will be going from one day to the next; your life is all about spontaneity. One day you’re exploring the rolling hills of New Zealand, the next you’re on a small dingy island hopping around Fiji.
The life of a traveler is a good one; there’s no two ways about that, it’s also an adventurous one. When you travel, you are open to adventure because you have to be. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss out on a once in a lifetime experience, now would you? Part of being open to adventure is being willing to pick up and go somewhere new at a minute’s notice.
While that’s all well and good, it’s important to be a smart traveler and put your life before anything else. This means, as the boy scouts would say, always being prepared, so that should the worst happen – aka you get lost exploring a mountain trail, you have what you need to survive.
Always carry a map (and compass)
As soon as you arrive in a new area, the first thing that you should do is buy a map. Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake of relying on your phone. Sure, your sat nav works fine at home, but in a foreign country, there are no guarantees, especially if you plan on exploring remote places. As well as purchasing a map, if you don’t already have one, get a compass. In a situation where you are lost and don’t know where you are, a map and a compass could save your life. Just as long as you know how to use a compass and read a map, that is. If you don’t, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials that you can watch to learn.
Never go adventuring without emergency supplies
If you are going to go adventuring somewhere off the beaten track, then it’s a good idea to make sure that you always carry emergency supplies with you, just in case you get lost or injure yourself in some way. One of the most important things is to find the best survival tent so that you have somewhere to sleep if you get lost and can keep warm. Unlike normal tents, these are much lighter and just pop up, allowing you to sleep anywhere. As well as a tent, it’s also important to pack matches, flares, food and water, a first aid kit, and a fully charged emergency phone. That way, whatever happens, you are covered.
Whenever you head off, tell someone where you’re going
Have you ever seen 127 Hours – the movie where James Franco falls down a cliff? Well, the reason he spent so long trapped and ended up cutting off his own hand was because no one knew where he was going. So before you head off on an adventure, always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. As that way, if you don’t return when you should do, then there is someone to raise the alarm.
The chances are that your adventures will go without a hitch, but it always pays to be prepared, just in case.
