There’s a chill in the air and the cold nights are drawing in but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little festive cheer. And there’s no better place to find it than in York. If you’ve never visited the city before it’s well worth a visit, not least for the stunning architecture but also for the friendly, bustling atmosphere and quirky charm.
York is always a lively city, but during the festive period it really comes alive with shoppers, entertainers and families. This year, you’ll find street markets from the 28th November onwards where you can get some hot mulled wine or roasted chestnuts to really get you into the Christmas spirit. You’ll also find a wide range of handmade gifts and local produce so you can find some unique presents for friends and family.
From the 14th-15th of December, York holds the Festival of Angels which showcases some amazing ice sculptures. It really does transform York into a winter wonderland. As well as this there’s also a great programme of Christmas events including traditional pantomime and whiskey tasting and music at the historic Fairfax House.
When it comes to shopping, you’ll be spoilt for choice. York has a unique feel to it, with its cobbled streets filled with boutique shops. The McArthur Glen shopping outlet is located just a ten minute drive from the city centre if you prefer to do your shopping indoors. Otherwise, in the city centre there’s also plenty of markets. On 28th November you’ll find St Nicholas Fayre, a Victorian market with traditional gifts and carol singing. There’s also the Medieval Market at Barley Hall and the York Festive Fayre which continues right up to 24th December.
For a unique festive experience, York is definitely worth a visit. There’s nothing better to get you in the Christmas spirit than being surrounded by lights, music and the smell of roasted chestnuts!
