5 things no one ever told you would happen while you were travelling

Travelling is all about experiencing new things and it’s important to enter into it with an open mind. There will certainly be ups and downs (mainly ups) but here are a few things people might not have warned you about before you embarked on your adventure of a lifetime.

1. You will get sick

It’s inevitable that at some point in your trip you will eat something funny or drink some strange water which will ultimately result in some highly inconvenient and embarrassing sickness. Don’t get complacent while you’re travelling. Just remember that you are in a new place, and foods which you think are safe might not sit so well in your stomach. As unpleasant as it is to think about make sure you take lots of different types of medicine with you from headache tablets to diarrhoea tablets. Also, get some proper travel insurance before you set off in case the worst comes to the worst and you end up in the hospital bed.

2. Your Facebook will never be the same

Facebook is a great way for friends and family to see what you’re up to while you’re travelling. You’ll have new friend requests galore as you meet people along the way. But, trust me, you will befriend some overly enthusiast traveller who will constantly post stuff on your wall from now until forever. Expect photos from that fateful bar crawl to reappear and videos of you embarking on a drinking contest with the locals are sure to make an appearance.

3. You will lose belongings

When you’re happily packing you backpack for your travels just remember that you probably won’t return with the same stuff you started will. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, you will lose stuff. Secondly, you will probably realise you brought too much stuff; books, clothes, etc., and end up giving some of it away. Thirdly, you may be prey to pickpockets. Although it’s not a nice thing to think about, make sure you keep your wits about you and keep a close eye on your belongings.

4. You will fall in love

It’s the classic holiday romance; fleeting and intense. No doubt you will meet an amazing boy/girl, you’ll watch the sun set together, go swimming in the sea and go for walks on the beach, only to end up going your separate ways.

5. You’ll go skinny dipping

Particularly if you live in Britain, like me, where the temperature barely rises above tepid, the thought of skinny dipping has probably never occurred to you. But with travelling comes the baffling desire to take your clothes off and jump in the sea with all the fish and sharks.

Have you had any experiences you never thought would happen while travelling?
